About one third of them are boiling water reactors while the other two thirds
are pressurized water reactors. The difference between the two is that boiling
water reactors boil water and heat it into directly to steam inside the reactor
and the steam is then carried to a turbine that drives a generator which then
produces electricity. Any unused steam is just recycled back into water through
the use of a condenser and then is reused in the process. Pressurized water
reactors heat the water and instead of directly boiling it, these reactors keep
the water under pressure and pumps it to a steam generator and from there it’s
heated and boiled to make steam to spin a turbine that generates electricity. Again
any unused steam is just recycled back into the process.

 Nuclear energy like most other fuel sources
cause problems to the environment. No, nuclear energy does not negatively
affect the atmosphere and unlike fossil fuels, it is a nonrenewable energy
source that does not emit carbon pollutant. Nuclear energy is a fine
nonrenewable resource that can continue to be used, but that is only if nuclear
waste is disposed of properly. Nuclear waste is either
considered high or low-level waste. High level waste fall more along the lines
of byproducts from nuclear plants, nuclear fuel, and in medicine. This waste
can give off large amounts of radiation for thousands of years and there’s
really no safe place to store it. Through direct exposure to this level of
waste one can be almost instantly killed. Low level nuclear waste on the other
hand are like objects or even clothing that has been exposed to radiation. This
level of waste is much easier to dispose of than high level wastes. The problem
of nuclear waste disposal stems mostly from high level waste.

There
are four types of radiation which are alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron. Alpha
radiation, while it is the largest particle emitted from the atom, is the least
penetrating of the bunch and is able to easily be shielded by paper. The
primary source of this radiation is from reactor fuel from nuclear power plants
and is most dangerous when it is either inhaled or ingested into the body. Beta
radiation is the smallest of the particles and is able to penetrate dead layers
of skin where energy is deposited into skin cells. Beta radiation is able to be
shielded by just a piece of plastic, aluminum, or clothing. Neutron radiation
is either emitted through decay of as part of fission and its primary source is
the nuclear fission process. This type of radiation is best shielded by
concrete and water. Gamma radiation is the wave emitted from the nucleus of the
atom and it is completely body penetrating. Being exposed to radiation can turn
out to be very harmful to the body and in some cases can cause death. Exposure
can cause cancer, genetic defects, abnormalities, and more. The severity of
being exposed to radiation depends things like how much a person has been
exposed to, how the person was exposed, the type of radiation they were exposed
to, the rate of exposure, and the health of the person being exposed. There are
two categories that health effects from radiation can be broken down into.
These two categories are chronic and acute exposure. Chronic exposure is
continuous exposure over e lengthy period of time. After being exposed there is
a delayed period before health effects are observed. Acute exposure occur
either at once time or multiple times in a short period and it’s when large
parts of the body get exposed to large quantities of radiation. Sometimes it
can take years after exposure for effects to start to show. Examples of these
effects include different types of cancer and birth defects. Acute exposure is
what causes sickness and/or death in very short periods of time. This type of
exposure is usually associated with the term radiation sickness. An example of
this type of radiation that many people are aware of is the Chernobyl accident,
during which people were killed due to the large exposure of radiation. The
best way to shield this type of radiation is through the use of lead.

Low
level waste was originally dumped into oceans and buried in shallow landfills
during the early 1940s and 50s. Fast forward to today and low level waste is
now disposed at specific facilities that have been licensed by the Nuclear
Regulatory Commission. These facilities are designed and operated to meet a set
of safety guidelines. There are currently four of such facilities located in
the United States that accept low level waste. High level waste is a whole
different game because the United States doesn’t have any permanent disposal
sites for this type of waste. Scientist have come to the conclusion that at
this time, the best solution to getting rid of nuclear waste is by burying the
waste deep underground in geological repositories. The nuclear waste would be
sealed in containers and then later buried in isolated areas until they
eventually stopped decaying. There are so many uncertainties that come with
geological repositories due to activities like earthquakes and tornadoes. Even
the smallest of nuclear waste leaks could have dire consequences on the surrounding
life and environment.
