On January 9th, 1982, Catherine “Kate” Elizabeth Middleton was born in Reading, Berkshire, England, to Michael and Carole Middleton (Kate Middleton). She is the eldest of three children, having a younger sister, Philippa “Pippa”, and a younger brother, James. Kate came from a working-class of builders and coal miners from her mother’s side. Her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Goldsmith, pushed her children to go for the better jobs and to aim high, as a result, Kate’s mother became an airline hostess- at the time it was considered a glamorous job. It was at the job, at British Airways, that Carole met Michael Middleton, a dispatcher who’s wealthy family hails from Leeds, which has ties to British aristocracy. They married soon after they met, and started a mail-order party goods company. Eventually making the Middleton family millionaires.Carole Middleton, the daughter of a builder, grew up in Southall in a council house (Steafel). She attended local state schools, had a Saturday job at C throughout her teenage years, and after leaving school, Carole decided to get a job as an air hostess for British Airways. She worked as an air hostess all the way to the later stages of her pregnancy with Kate. It was when searching for a way to earn money that wouldn’t make her have to leave for a job, that Party Pieces was brought to life, all from a kitchen table in Bucklebury, England. Those who know Carole describe her as warm, motherly, a devoted grandma, fun enough to be the last on on the dance floor, and also a hard worker. “My parents taught me about the importance of qualities like kindness, respect, and honesty. I realize how central values like these have been to me throughout my life.”-Kate Middleton (Kate Middleton Quotes). Michael Middleton is the Leeds-born son of an airline pilot, who was working as an air steward for British Airways when he met his future wife Carole Goldsmith in the met his future wife, Carole Goldsmith, in the mid-1970’s (Steafel). Despite inheriting a comfortable amount of money via his grandfather, Michael and Carole were able to send Kate, Pippa, & James to private school, and to own expensive property in London and Berkshire. Gary Goldsmith is Kate’s Uncle, and the younger brother of Carole. He is a controversial man, he has, in the years since their family has been in the spotlight, made many giant faux pas. Including giving a 16-page interview to Hello! Magazine describing Kate and Williams stay at his home in Ibiza (Steafel). Kate and her family lived in Amman, Jordan, from May 1984 to September 1986 where her father worked as a manager for British Airways. Upon their return, they lived in Chapel, Row, a village near Newbury, Berkshire, England (Southerland). Kate’s education was very similar to her dad’s in the way she attended exclusive independent schools. At four years-old, Kate had been enrolled in the co-ed independent primary school named St. Andrews School near her home, where she attended until she was 13 (from 1986 to 1995). She boarded there for part of the week during her final two years. Kate discovered her love of sport at school. Her 1.50m high-jump record, set in 1995, had still not been beaten at the time she returned for her visit as the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate’s other sporting records included being the leading goal scorer for her hockey team, which she was also the captain for, and she also still held the joint record for the 4×100 relay (Southerland). In addition to being active in sports, kate played first the recorder and second the flute in the school orchestra. She also sang in her school’s choir, and participated in dramas, performing Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady and the role of Prince Charming in Cinderella. After completing her education at St. Andrews, in 1996, Kate attended the all-girls Downe House School in Berkshire for only two terms. It is believed that she was severely bullied by some of the other girls. She received a recommendation from the from the head teacher at her previous school that she move to Marlborough College, which she accepted (Southerland). While it was very unusual to switch schools during an academic year, Kate switched to Marlborough College, an elite co-educational school located in Wiltshire. Her classmates described Kate to be level-headed, popular, and talented. She played in the first pair at tennis and was the captain of the school’s hockey team. Kate initially planned to attend the University of Edinburgh and applied for Art History. However, Kate made the sudden choice to drop out and take a gap year, before applying to study the History of Art at the University of St.Andrew’s. Both Kate and William started their studies at the University in 2001, and were art history students residing in room close to each other in St. Salvator’s Hall, when they began a friendship. During University, it appears that they built a strong foundation for a relationship. William and Kate continued to spend time together as friends, which included watching rugby in May 2003 and Kate’s attendance at William’s 21st birthday party in 2003. Unofficial reports indicate Kate and William started dating around Christmas time in 2003. But, in April 2007, they decided to take a break from their relationship. They rekindled their relationship as early as June 2007. Kate and William got engaged in October 2010, during a ten-day trip to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya. Prince William gave Kate his late mother’s Sapphire and Diamond engagement ring, which Diana, Princess of Wales, had been presented by Prince Charles (Southerland). On April 29, 2011, Kate Middleton and Prince William got married at Westminster Abbey in London. There were 1,900 guests and it broadcast live for the whole world to see. Their official title as husband and wife was The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate and William wrote a prayer specifically for their wedding. The prayer was: “God our father, we thank you for our families; for the love that we share, and for the joy of our marriage” (Topping). On December 3, 2012, after almost a year of baby rumors and much speculation, St. James Palace announced that Kate was pregnant. On July 22, 2013 the Palace announced that Kate had given birth to a baby boy, he weighed 8 pounds and 6 ounces. His name is Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge and is third in line to the throne (Kate Middleton). Then, in the month of September 2014, her second pregnancy was made public. On the 5th of May in 2015, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was born weighing in at 8 pounds 3 ounces. The Princess is fourth in line to the throne. Finally, in September of 2017, the Duke and Duchess announced that they would soon be having their third child. This baby is due sometime in April 2018, that baby will be fifth in line to the throne. Before her 30th birthday in 2012, Middleton travelled across the United Kingdom for extensive research of charities, following which she picked four. The charities she chose to take under her patronage were The Art Room, National Portrait Gallery, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice, and Action on Addiction (Roy). Even though she grew up very privileged already, she has become one of the most influential people in the world because she is very into charity work surrounding child-aid and she is the first royal woman to have a degree from university (Southerland).
